I've been thinking about it a lot lately and.......I don't really like Facebook.
Let me reword that. I like Facebook, but not the idea of FB. Does that make sense?
After getting super addicted to FB, I decided I'd only get on once a day. The more I don't get on, the more I realize how silly it is.
Let me explain more.
Here's why I DON'T like it:
(1. It's SO self-centered. (I.E. "Who liked my status?" "Who liked my status?" etc.)
(2. It's time consuming. It sucks up so much time and leaves you wondering "Where'd my time go????"
(3. It's super distracting.
(4. It can leave you feeling frustrated/jealous with people. Sometimes leaves you wishing you'd been invited to do things with people.
(5. A very CHEAP and EASY way to get involved in people's lives without caring too much. Bad.
So...what's the good about it?
(1. It can be used as ministry. When people get on my FB wall, I hope they see Jesus!
(2. Encouraging. Use it as an encouragement!
(3. VERY easy way to get ahold of people (since we don't have cell phones)
(4. Nice and fun to keep in contact with friends from my mission trips, etc.
I decided not to get on FB until next Wednesday. Not just to practice self control, but also to challenge myself to get really, personally involved in people's lives. To live in the present. Two of my great friends Grace and Joanna don't have FB so it forces me to try so much harder to get involved in their lives and stay in contact than just a little post on their wall (or Timeline).
Anyways, what do you think? How do you use FB for good?

Yeah, it's really easy to use FB for good, for neutral, or for bad. For me (not sure if this is good or what), it helps me feel connected to friends and acquaintances. It helps us keep in touch. Though I must say, I miss the old days where it was more difficult to keep in touch, but more effort was put into it (writing letters, long phone calls, visits). Like you said, it makes relationship interaction easy without investing too much. It can also be something where you can put a lot into or not. You can use it primarily for others or for self-centeredness. I don't want to glorify facebook or to bash it - it's all up to how we use it. Those are my thoughts. Love you!!
I miss the good ol' days of snail mail, too! It's so much more special to receive a letter than email, though I like email too. But letters are so much more thoughtful and take a stinkin' more lot of time!
Yeah...it's like we have more connection with a lot more people, but less connection than ever. Justin came Bethany and I the book, "The Church of FB," which is superb! I really liked it. When you come back, I'll let you borrow it if you want.
Do you think you get the FB less or about the same since you moved?
Yeah, so true. More connection, but less connection. Good way to put it! It's so interesting to ponder.
I definitely don't check FB as much since work goes from 9-6 and I don't get to check it there. It's a nice break! FB is a good dessert, but not a good main dish. I'll leave with that inspiring thought from my own little chicken butt brain! It's fun to discuss FB and such things :)
I agree..FB can be used for good, but it is distracting sometimes! But it is nice when you want to keep in contact with people that you don't know well enough e-mail, write letters, text, or call. =)
Lizard-Yeah, that's a superb way to put it! Good dessert...bad main dish. But i guess it's all about balance because I can so easily use the time I would have been on FB and apply it to Youtube or whatever. Movie trailers can be addicting!
Em-Yeah, good point! FB is nice for kinda shallower relationships where you're not exactly besties with the person, but wanna keep in contact with them. Good chatting tonight!
Yeah I agree. It's great not to be on fb as much but sometimes I find myself craving it and I'm like, "what the heck! You know it's not going to fulfill you or make you happy, Bethany. It's not even that amazing." But somehow I oddly think it will make me feel better when I'm down or something. Strange. Probably a conspiracy.
I'm not on Facebook so I can't give fisrt-hand evidence of the effects on my life.
I do know that it can be a waste of time to inform people of what you had for breakfast (not that everybody does that).
I think, like alot of other things, Facebook can be used for good or for bad. Just like a gun can be used for good or for bad. The same goes for computers.
Tell me what you think.
I tend to stick to telling people what I had for dinner and occasionally what I had for lunch...as it is much more interesting.
